A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

In 1921 the expression “One look is worth a thousand words” first appeared in the Printers Ink. The writer of this expression, Frederick R Barnes was commenting on the fact that graphics can tell a story as effectively as a large amount of descriptive text, when advertising on the side of streetcars.

Over time Frederick’s expression has changed into the proverb “a picture is worth a thousand words,” so working off this philosophy, it would make perfect sense to add the ability to submit a maintenance issue with an accompanying picture. A quick snap could highlight areas in the issue that are otherwise left unnoticed. Allowing maintenance personnel to quickly and easily formulate a plan on how to rectify the issue at hand.

One of the core components of the MEX system is the ability to capture maintenance requests. These requests can in turn be reviewed, approved or declined, and turned into Work Orders. MEX is able to capture these requests through the main MEX application in the Request Module and also through a dedicated requesting application, we call MEX Ops. Ops allows non-MEX users to simply log in, add in a request and submit this request to their maintenance team. Up until now, Ops users were only able to submit requests through a web browser and only in descriptive form.

With the introduction of the MEX Ops app for iOS devices, now more than ever, users can submit maintenance requests anywhere, anytime. We have gone from having entirely descriptive based requests, to having the ability to add an image of the issue. Telling a comprehensive story of the issue and allowing for better issue resolution.

The next time that water pipe in the ceiling of your office starts leaking. Take out your iPhone, open the MEX Ops app, create a new request, take a picture and submit the request. It’s that simple!

MEX will be instantly notified of the request, together with the Asset in question, a description of the issue (if one has been included), the contact details of the requestor, and a copy of the photograph taken. If more information is needed, MEX admins can directly chat with the person requesting the work and establish the urgency of the issue.

So if you’re still using post it notes to capture maintenance work, have a maintenance phone that rings off the hook, or get stopped unnecessarily to fix some minor issue, maybe it’s time you invested in a proven request management system. Get MEX, install MEX Ops and get your users onto the MEX Ops iOS app. Working with requests will never be the same again.
